How anglers fish a green light
A submersible green light is a night-fishing tool: anglers set it out after dark, then fish around it. Here's how it's commonly done.
- Set it and let the spot build. Lower the light over the side once it's dark and give the area time. Many crappie guides run their light about 10 feet down, adjusting for the depth they're fishing.
- Fish the edge, not just the glow. Crappie often hold where the light fades into the dark, the "shadow line", rather than in the brightest water. Work your jig or minnow along that edge.
- Clear water carries light farther. The same light reaches much deeper and wider in clear water than in stained or muddy water. In dingy water, fish closer to the light.
- Pair it with the right bait. Small jigs and live minnows are the usual choices around a light.
