It’s a tribute to my late grandfather, Ralph Broome—a hardworking, big-hearted man whose CB radio handle was Snowball, and whose favorite place in the world was wherever the fish were biting.
If there was a lake nearby, you could almost guarantee Snowball was on it—fishing for anything that would pull a float under. Crappie, bream, you name it. He didn’t fish to “look the part.” He fished because he loved it—because it brought peace, because it brought stories, and because he believed every trip to the water was worth making.
Growing up, I went just about everywhere he went. He used to call me his shadow, and I wore that title proud. Riding along with him meant more than time together—it meant lessons. Not the kind you get from a book, but the kind you get from watching a man pay attention to every detail: the wind, the light, the water color, the bite window, and the little changes that turn a slow day into a good one.
Snowball worked as a plant manager in the textile industry, and his work ethic showed up in everything he did—including fishing. He approached the water the same way he approached life: prepared, consistent, and always looking for a smarter way to do things. And when it came to bait, he was endlessly inventive. He was the type who always had “a little trick” up his sleeve—something small, something simple, something most folks wouldn’t think about—but it made a difference. He believed that better bait didn’t just mean more bites—it meant better bites, and bigger fish.
I’ll never forget the old-school ideas he’d try. I even watched him spit tobacco juice on crickets one day and tell me bream liked that sweet taste—just one of those “Snowball tricks” that made you laugh, then made you wonder, because somehow his tricks worked more often than they didn’t. That was him in a nutshell: creative, observant, and never afraid to try something different if it might put more fish in the bucket.
